Math has come to a screeching halt at my house….because of me! We’ve been using Singapore with my Ds 6.5 for the past two years, but I think some of it is moving too quickly, so I am looking at MEP for him. We have been playing math games for the past week or two, but I am the one who is afraid to start again. The crazy thing is, I AM a math person..I guess I just don’t want him to hate math. (we supplement with Life of Fred for fun.)

All that said, my paralysis comes from knowing where to start in MEP….any thoughts? We are a little over halfway though Singapore 1A.

    Help!

Any particular reason you don’t want to continue Singapore? If not, breathe and pick up from where you left off to see how it goes before heading to another curriculum. From experience, it’s all math. We’ve tried all sorts of programs and it came down to doing it more than finding the right one.

Not an especially helpful answer, but may stall out spending $ until 1A is finished. ;0)

If you are in Singapore 1A, and you do definitely want to change, I’d start in MEP 1A.  (You could do the first lessons quicker as they will be easy….)

I don’t do MEP, but I did do Singapore in the early years with a few of my kids. You are right that it moves quickly.

What we did (instead of beginning a new curriculum mid-year) is to park it where the child is feeling comfortable and begin a more activity oriented math (games, manipulatives, etc…) there. We might also do a worksheet page once or twice a week.

My kids always seemed to go through learning spurts in math, and generally within a month or two of alternating paper practice and manipulatives, they were ready to move on to the next concept. Just my .02 :).
