Has anyone tried Math Mammoth? I’m looking into it for my 3rd grader. She loves using Khan Academy, but I feel like Khan Academy is a great supplement, and not a whole math curriculum. She picks up skills fairly quickly and gets bored with too much of a spiral approach, but does need some practice. I read the review on Cathy Duffy, and it sounds like it may be a good fit but would love some first-hand experience information.

We love Math Mammoth. We’ve used it from first to fourth currently and plan to use it through level seven. It’s just set up so beautifully and love how Maria Miller wrote it. You are always moving forward, but with math your using what you already learned to move forward (kind of a built in review). There are extra worksheets, websites with games, etc if you ever feel like you need extra practice on a skill, as well as tons of free videos by her.

There are different series and placement tests to help you daughter with a good place to start. You could do a placement test and even send the scores to Ms. Miller and she’ll help you with finding the best place to start with the curriculum.

That helps tremendously, thank you! It almost sounds too good to be true. 😉
I went ahead and ordered the first workbook and printed out the end of second grade placement test. Everything I’ve seen so far looks really good. And actually very affordable!

Keep in mind, when you are transitioning to a new math curriculum they all present it a little differently. There will be a learning curve no matter what math curriculum you use. The nice thing about Math Mammoth is you can get Ms. Miller’s Blue series on addition and subtraction (probably want the 2A and/or 2B) for about $4 each in a PDF. It would allow you to get up to speed on how she approaches the mental math. It’s also a great way to try out the curriculum.
