I was just reading on a couple other posts that a few of you use this Math.

    We have a curriculum for 4th – 12th– but I was looking at it for K – 3rd.

I had never really looked at it before— it looks really good.

    Could somebody tell me

Does it explain things really well? Even in the upper grades?

Could this be self taught in the older grades if needed??

Is there enough review and repitition?

My children need alot of review– or they forget.

Any thought or comments would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Mic

We’ve only used for up to 2nd and some 3rd concepts (measurements). The reason I chose it is due to it being mastery based-lots of review and practice. Also, it’s colorful and has an artistic quality to some of it’s teachings.

Yes, the directions are clear and can be self-taught, IMO. My son, who’s 10, does the measuremtn supplement and he teaches himself. I think it’s very thorough and self-teaching.

You can add in marbles or an abacus or any other manipulatives you desire if that benefits your child.

ON top of all those good qualities is the price!

I may have to look at this for my 11yo (oops, make that 12yo tomorrow!) autistic son.  He has such frustrations with math, and most of his lessons consist of either spending however many minutes he can tolerate practicing a set of five addition facts or working through 3-4 math problems–if he doesn’t make too many mistakes or forget too much and give up. Reading Rachel’s post somehow produced an “aha!” in me when she mentioned that it has lots of review and practice. I think that’s what we might need, lessons that don’t just cover something a time or two and move on.

I’m not sure why this didn’t click before, or I would have asked the question, “what math curriculum would you recommend that takes things at a slower, more thoughtful, reviewing pace for my son?”

Plus, if they fail to do well, then you can reprint the page and have them redo it.

My dd has sensory dysfunction and struggles with those things that are sequential and patterned in nature (like math!), she has to have much repetition.

Half-way thru, she  starts putting numbers in wihout them having any relation to the directions; having her stop midway, switching to another subject that uses a different side of her brain, then  coming back to her math lesson, helps immensely.

I have her use an abacus with MM.

Since she is auditory, I also include her math facts to music that she listens to with Classical Math to Classical Music.

I am planning to use Math Mammoth this year, myself.  The cost and the fact that it is self-teaching are my biggest reasons for picking MM, that and the fact that it is mastery based.

I had my 7 year old do the 1st half of the placement test this afternoon.  I thought he’d have trouble with the telling time, money and measurement  portions as they really didn’t cover those topics in grade 1 at PS.  So far he has flown through the time questions, and while I may have to give him some Canadian money to help him with the money portion tomorrow, I think he’s going to surprise me again.  I’m glad, because there shouldn’t be a problem placing him directly into the grade 2 Light Blue series.   I was afraid that he might fall somewhere in the middle of the first grade series.

My older son wants to repeat grade 4 math.  He got mostly A’s & the odd B this past year at PS math, but doesn’t feel he has a really good handle on the mutiple digit muliplication & division or fractions & decimals.  I think that is becasue the PS uses a spiral approach.  I was surprised by him saying this (wanting to repeat rather than move on).  I told him I thought that was very mature and wise of him to recognize that he would benefit from mastering these things before moving on.  I am going to try to give him some incentive to work on the grade 4 placement test this afternoon and see if he could pass it or not.  I think he may have difficulty with the larger numbers.  I like that I have the option with Math Math to get the Blue series books to cover areas where he may be weak without making him “repeat” a whole year.  We are also looking at possibly getting the SCM business math, especially if we are going the blue book route.   I think it would be fun for him.
