I have looked into this per some suggestions on other posts. It looks very good! Someone mentioned using it as a supplement to RS Math…does it have to be a supplement…I mean do you feel it is lacking some things? If it is just hands on games, I think I can come up with that on my own. I am kind of excited about this. It looks likes a less expensive…less bells and whistles…math program…please if you have experience…give me more feedback!
The Light Blue program is a complete curriculum by grade level. We enjoyed it. It covers everything well, I think.
We’re using Strayer-Upton Practical Arithmetic (NO bells and whistles at all) this year and have Math Mammoth on the side for supplementation. I may be odd, but for some reason, I really like the OLD math texts!
I love Math Mammoth. I’m using it with all 3 of my girls and it’s the only math we use. I love it because math was my most hated/feared subject in school and this curriculum is so well laid out and explainatory that it’s easy for me to help my child understand. My girls love it. They usually do a page or two a day – my oldest does 2 pages, youngest does 1.
I have my younger two in the Light Blue series, but my oldest is in the Blue series and we are just going through the books based on Maria’s recommendation listed here as to which order to do the books. Maria is also very nice and helpful.
I print the books on grayscale and just print enough for a week or two at a time.
Kind of late here, but we use MM also. My 11yo ds uses the fraction text only and he really likes it. I feel it explains concepts in such an easy to read way. It has helped me to understand certain concepts that I just didn’t get in school. I like that when its printed (or if you print a few pages at a time) then it goes in a binder and your ready to go. No manipulatives (in this one anyway) and that makes it very portable. My son brings it along if we’re going to be out and about and he needs something to work on independently. I love that it doesn’t require any prep work or much explaination on my part. Plus you’re able to pick one concept at a time if you want to focus on just one. I felt my son needed a deeper knowledge of fractions so that’s the one we bought. $4.75+.94 binder+paper/ink from our printer.
My 7 yo is having some trouble understanding the concept of telling time. I know he’s only 7, but he really wants to understand so I’m probably going to get him the program for just that concept. HTH
We use it and really love it. It is the only math my daughter won’t complain about! I purchased the Blue Series K-3 package and printed each book out. I can choose what to work on each day and it is going great. I love the ease of use. If you are interested in this I would purchase it through the homeschool buyers coop and get a 20% discount off of the already nice price. I think with the discount I got the materials for k-3 for about $35.00! Can’t beat that. If your kids like workbooks then this is certainly the way to go.
We’re just about to start Math Mammoth light Blue series Grade 3. We were using MEP but I was finding it teacher intensive, and wanted ds to be led into a bit more independant study as he grows, and I couldn’t see this happening with MEP. I really like MEP and don’t like changing programmes but have finally decided to try something else. Ds is not a fan of manipulatives but does like the lessons to include his stuffed animals (a bit of a social game I think) !
I really like what I have read about MM, the price, all the extras that come with it to help such as 7 soft-pak programmes (including language arts) and Schoolhouse Technologies Maths Resource Studio that helps create your own support materials. It seems MM is mastery based but with a touch of spiral.
Has anyone used grade 3 and have any tips or advice?
My ds is not a fan of math although his confidence did improve while using MEP, I was just finding it a little hard to manage the time it took for me sometimes. Anyway we’ll give MM a go.
Just wanted to chime in here. We started using Math Mammoth right before our Term 2 break and jumped back into it during this Term 3. So far, it has been a blessing. We had been using Right Start for years; and I still believe that is a wonderful Math curriculum….BUT I really love MM for the simplicity of it all. Very little Teacher prep and involvement. Basically, I’m involved enough to help out when needed.
My eldest is going on 12, and she had worked through all of the levels of Right Start. There were some areas that she felt foggy on; so we are focusing on those. Right now, she is doing Division, and at current is into the advanced Long Division. She is feeling very comfortable in it, and she feels as if MM has made the difference.
My 8 yr old dd was in tears with RS, and so we are trying MM. She likes it, as long as we aren’t doing clocks. With that being said though, I feel her understanding of clocks has improved after doing MM.
