I know a few people had this…  is it worth the price?  Have your kids learned a lot from it?  Are there enough practice problems for the new learner?  I have a bright almost 5 year old who desperately wants to do his own school for Kindergarten in the fall.  Thoughts?

    thanks,

I don’t have an answer for you, but I’ve planned on buying Math Lessons for a Living Edu. for my ds who will be 5yo this fall. I looked at the online samples and the only change I may make – that I know of – is to not have him write/copy the addition problems. I’ll just have him work it out with manipulatives.

We used Book 1 with my K’er and Book 2 with my 2nd grader. My K’er flew through Book 1 and *loved* it. My 2nd grader was coming from Singapore and got stuck at about lesson 17 in Book 2. We switched back to Singapore and plan on using MLLE as review of a different way to approach math. My rising 1st grader will begin Book 2 in July. Not sure when I’ll start Singapore with her …

great post! I look forward to hearing other experiences. I purchased book two recently for my daughter who is struggling in math, but due to an order glitch, the order never went through and I don’t have the money for it now.

erin.kate, did you find book 1 to be thorough – with enough practice for mastery of the concepts?  that’s my biggest concern…i’d like a little more than a basic introduction to the problems…i’d like for my son to really get it, but not be stressed or overwhelmed by the work, you know?  all my kindergarteners before this have used MUS primer, just moving at a comfy pace.  just wondering if MLLE is better because of its CM angle.

    thank,

Hi Amy ~ Something that I loved so much about MLLE was its teaching of place value. It is done SO well. I even had my 2nd grader go over it in MLLE Book 1 with my K’er, as I find it is explained in such clear, thorough, hands-on terms. Smart! It is presented so differently than what I was accustomed to with Singapore, but for my creative K’er this year, it was perfect, and yes, I do feel that for the concepts it introduced my daughter did master them. Once we got to the middle of Book 2 with my 2nd grader, we did need to slow down and I included more practice, then we stopped MLLE and went back to Singapore, now we’re reviewing Singapore with the rest of MLLE. The approaches are so different, but MLLE has taught my girls a fresh way of looking at math. I’m grateful, though Singapore does resonate more with my oldest, though I can see using MLLE with my rising 1st grader for quite some time. Hmm, did that help at all? 🙂

I’m glad to hear that, erin.kate. I figured that my 2nd grade dd would want to sit in on the MLLE with ds because of the story style. I’m glad that it may help her with concepts like place value. I plan on having her do Math Mammoth for the written part of her math lessons.
