I really need some advice regarding math. Mainly for my 8th grader. We have used mainly MUS and we are plugging through but I am starting to feel plugging through is all we are doing. I decided to switch to Rays for this year for all three kids, 3rd, 6th, and 8th. But now I am having doubts. I think all of my kids will do so much better with a more one on one style, especially my 8th grader, but teaching 8th grade math is a bit scary. One concern with my 8th grader is that having used MUS, and being “behind” will mean I have a lot of gaps to fill in. I planned to put ds13 in Rays Higher Math, stopping when necessary to go back to previous Rays books and teach from the beginning. This will certainly take time and commitment on the teachers part, which I am willing to do if it makes sense. I will do this same thing with my dd11, it just seems easier at that level. My other consideration is Practical Mathematics by Kathering Sloop. It is meant to be independent, but I think I will be more hands on, at least in the beginning. The books review all math operations, and the author said I may have to add more practice problems for new concepts, but the instruction is all there in the first “review” chapters. After completing the two book set the student is ready for algebra. So school starts in 6 days and I havent nailed down math yet. Any advice? I really dont know what to do. I really need to teach/reteach from the beginning, and still get him to algebra by 10th grade. Help……
