Math Facts NOW or Rapid Recall

My DD is doing MUS Gamma.  We have used MUS since Alpha.  We work through each set of facts until she knows them and I know that she can get 100% on her test.  But, as time goes by she forgets the math facts even though we are doing the review pages. She will have to really think about her addition facts and trying to remind her to use the “8 wants to be a 10” trick and the others just upset her.  Her subtraction facts are far worse than her addition facts.  And, now we are working on multiplications.  She is learning them, but I notice her going back to skip counting instead of remembering the ones that we have learned.

I have flash cards that we made.  I have a set for each set of math facts we have learned through the MUS program.  Each set has a card with the answer and then a card without the answer.  We use the ones with the answer to get them in our minds and know them and then the ones without the answer to test ourselves and make sure that we know them.  We also have a chart that we march or toss a bean bag with while learning the facts.  The chart is just for multiplication and will also be used with division.

I was thinking of getting Rapid Recall for her but the price has held be back right now.  I’ve been trying to save up the money for it but am not there yet.  Then I saw Math Facts NOW! mentioned in a post last week.  Does it get just as good results?  I’d have to say that the price is much nicer.  Which one would you use?  Even though Math Facts NOW! price is so reasonable I don’t want to get something just to not have it work for her.  Though I know sometimes it is just trial and error until the right fit for each child is found.

I’ve no experience with Math Facts NOW, but can highly recommend RR. It worked wonders for my dd12.

I’m not familiar with Rapid Recall but we do use Math Facts Now. A few things I like about it:

    – Bare bones – no distracting music or graphics, no ‘tricks’ to learning facts.

    – You set the lessons. For example after my 1st and 2nd grader worked on +1,+2,+3,+4 I made a “Add Review” lesson on just those facts. Then they review those easily while alternating with a new set of addition facts.

    – You set details: You choose how long they have to answer each fact, so in the beginning you can set longer time while they gain confidence and shorter time as they are more practiced. You choose how many facts they have to do in a lesson. My edition has a minimum of 50 facts, so when we’re doing x7s it will go through all the 7s facts randomly until they get 50 correct. You also decide how many times a child has to type a missed fact before moving on (minimum 2). So if they miss 7×2 then they are given a screen to type “7×2=14” twice. Then it moves them right back into the lesson. When that problem comes up again it will have red words reminding them to ‘be careful’.

Right now I have 3 children using it and they are in MUS Beta, Beta, and Epsilon. They are definitely doing better with remembering facts now! You can set up as many students as you wish. It also records their score, how many facts they answered too slowly (and which ones), how many facts they answered incorrectly (and which ones). You can go to the reporting area for each child to see and print results as far back as you wish, or just look at them to gauge progress.

We did a homemade version of Rapid recall, and it has worked well for our daughter.  We didn’t have the funds for Rapid Recall at the time, and I was desperate to help her remember her facts.  She can actually recall facts now, which is something she hadn’t been able to do in 2 years of working on it!

Rapid Recall has been a great supplement to our math. It is a bit pricey, but it can be used with multiple children. I make copies for each child and use a clear sheet protector with dry erase pens.
