I’m aware of several ways to practice math facts (from flashcards to games like pyramath to Math U See’s online drill page and Quarter Mile Math program for purchase). I would love to know what you or your children have liked the best and been consistent with? Free, cheap, expensive – I don’t care, just share your favorites! Thanks!

We love, love, love Reflex Math. The kids are doing so well with it. I like the parents dashboard and that the program keeps track of what facts are mastered and which ones need work. I also like that it emails me updates on the kids progress. 🙂

We have been using xtramath.org, free, online, keeps track of each child’s progress, not too painful.

We use Xtra Math or a Flashmaster.

My 8YO likes the Flashmaster. He enjoys seeing how many he can get right on Level 4 Multiplication in 90 seconds – and seeing if I can beat his score on Level 9 for 45 seconds.

We’ve used Calculadder for all our children and always found it simple and effective. Not exactly cheap though but since buying the downloadable versions it’s more cost effective (not as convenient though).

Rapid Recall! My daughter couldn’t get her math facts at all, we went over them again and again, year after year. Rapid Recall was the ONLY thing that has worked for her.

Rod and Staff math drill books have worked really well for us. I put one on the top of their math piles and do one sheet first. They sell them separately for each grade as a small book of daily drills; except for second grade. They also sell sheets of 100 problems for all four math facts; I think they are published by Pathway. All of it is very inexpensive and has been effective for us.

We’ve used xtramath.org for the past year and half. Very good results but eventually they kept “graduating” …..which is great, but I wanted my kids to have something that would allow us to keep up with drill “here and there” whenever I felt it needed some reinforcement.
We ended up having grandparents get the Flashmaster as a Christmas gift last year and it has been TERRIFIC! Even my almost-5 and almost-7 year old are into it, and know more facts using Flashmaster at this stage that my two eldest children ever did! Great also that it’s a portable handheld; we take it in the car constantly and even on just a 20 minute drive to choir practise they all take a turn on the Flashmaster (happily!) and are therefore using the time wisely…

Yes we have a flashmaster too! Just have to make sure there are batteries! 😉

xtramath is nice for keeping track
Timez Attack from http://www.bigbrainz.com/ is a game that uses math to beat the monsters. It is a fun way to practice.

Rapid Recall is what finally worked for dd13. Now, she will simply play a game or complete a timed test on occasion to stay sharp, but she’s got the facts down. Ds10 used RR too for +-x and does a variety of things periodically to stay sharp. He could have learned them any method, but used RR bc we had it. DD6 is just starting and likes the Addition Wrap Ups.
Currently my favorite is Math Fact Master and Timed Test for the ipad. We were using xtra math, but it frustrates the kids if they accidentally touch a wrong key and can’t fix it. These two new ones I downloaded this week don’t have that problem.

I’ve got a question about math fact practice. Do you learn them separately? In other words, do you work on all the addition math facts first until they know those well then move on to the subtraction math facts and focus on subtraction until they know those well, etc.?

We tried Xtramath, but it didn’t go over as well. It’s just online flash cards and the kids got bored. 🙁 I am curious about Rapid Recall though – are there games and things too, or is just online worksheets? Also, does it track progress? The site says the child needs to remember the color and number they are on each day, so does the site know which facts they need to work on?
I like the fun factor of Reflex Math, but am always on the lookout for free!!
