Can anyone tell me how they do map work with their Grade 1 kids who can’t read or write yet? For example in the Visits to Africa program? Thanks!

    My kids color the map.

For example the first week I give a blank map and they color the state/country that I point out. The next week they have a new blank map and they color from memory, trying to use the same colors as previous week for each location, then add the new states/countries from the new lesson.

It starts out a bit slow, but by the end of the year they are remembering the states/countries as I say the name and they color in the map.

For my reader but not strong writer I make a copy of the list of country/states in the back of the book and the student places the names on the blank map. I store the little slips of paper in an envelope to reuse each week.

Thank you! That’s a great idea. Anyone else with suggestions?

We do the same.  Even my 3rd grader colors instead of writes since she has a hard time fitting it in the spaces.  I figure we’ll re-use the same Visits books again, so it’s not a big deal.

Another thing they all like are Geopuzzles.   We usually get these out if there isn’t a map drill for the lesson or if I just need to keep them occupied.

This may not be CM map work, but maybe if it had existed in CM’s time!

My 17 yr. old son is a geography lover.  It all began when he did quiet time each afternoon as a little guy while his baby sisters slept.

He took to his room the Leap Frog Explorer Quantim Leap Talking Globe.  If he pointed to places with the “pen” it would name them.  It would give facts as well.  Over time he began doing the quizzes on the globe.  He learned every country and many facts about them all without any direction from me.  He would show me each day what he had learned.  I guess that is narration, right?

We still have that globe 14 years later and everyone has benefited from it.  Best $99 I ever spent! There is likely a newer and better version available today.  I would recommend it.  It was truly a gentle and interest based way of self-learning.
