I’m looking for some help on map drills. I have a vague sense of what they are, but am struggling to find any resources to explain it step by step. I need my hand held at first! 🙂 I have a 9 & 8 year old I’ll be doing them with.
We do it the easy way: students look at the map and try to memorize where countries/states are. Then we hide the map and try to label all we remember. Then we check how we did andmake corrections.
This week, I actually impressed myself and had them color the countries on their maps that I wanted them to learn. Then I read a bit about the countries. Then I asked them to label a clean map. They did really well!
I think it just seems too easy which is maybe why I keep thinking I need something more! Not that simple is a bad thing at all! I need to look again at the Visits books. I’ve loved all that I’ve tried so far of SCM’s plans. Thanks ladies!
We’ve found map drills to be very simple and effective! Visits is a great series and it’s very open and go. My DD impressed me with how quickly she picked up African countries…I think most adults would struggle to label just a few!
I haven’t used the Visits To…. series yet. It’s definitely on my list of things to do, but I tried to save money this year, so I used what I have. I already own a geography book pub by Evan Moore (the kind you pick up at Walmart or Staples), so I just photocopied the blank map for the area I want us to study and use that.
So, the CM method of studying geography is applicable to whatever resource you have, you don’t need specific books. That being said, I REALLY like everything I’ve purchased from SCM. And I do hope to use Visits To….. sometime.
