When doing map drill, do you have the children label the map as it is today or as it was in the time period you are studying in history?  I hope that makes sense.  For instance, we are now at the time of the birth of Christ in history.  I think they should know the current names of places, but wouldn’t it also help them understand the places in the Bible if they were aquainted with the names and boundaries of the places then?

    Thanks,

    Polly

We did and do both, for example when we are studying ancient times, we use outline maps to label them, and then look up the modern day maps and make one of those as well, both go in a notebook side by side.  It is really fascinating to see how places have changed, and it gives the girls a really good idea of where everything is both ancient and modern.

How old were your children when you began maps in notebooks?  Is 6 too young?  Should they be closer to 9 or 10?
