Hi all ~ my dd is turning 6 in January and I’m going to start doing some copywork with her. I’m adding a few things in this year step by step to make it a smoother transition to Module 1 in the fall. Anyway, I really like the copywork pages on this website, but I’m not sure how much to do and how often. Every day, twice a week, one page, one sentence, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you look under the Curriculum Guides and the Weekly Schedule they recommend doing it Everyday. I have done it everyday with my older son. I know the lesson should be short, but we are in 4th. I have my son do about 4-6 stanzas of a poem or one paragraph. Maybe just one sentence for 1st? Maybe another mom with a 1st grader will be more helpful and tell you how much they do.
For beginners, everyday practice is helpful. As for how much to do each day, keep in mind your goal: best effort. So start small and emphasize doing his best. You want to try to end the lesson before he begins to be sloppy and/or frustrated. For some children, that time might be after one letter. That’s fine. For other children, that time might be after one word, or one line, or one sentence. You know your child. Keep in mind that you will not be doing one letter for the rest of his school years. This is the beginning. You are laying the foundation of the habit of best effort (perfect execution, in Charlotte’s words). As with his other lessons, once he has developed the habits of attention and perfect execution in the shorter lesson, you can gradually increase the length of the lesson. No hurry. Remember that you are teaching so much more than just how to draw a letter.
Thanks again for your wise counsel, Sonya! She has little short fingers and I need to remind myself of the habits we are working on right now. Time to look at your DVD again, huh? A missionary friend in Portugal has it right now. Hopefully I will get it back soon.
Just wanted to say – with my son (who is still learning to write, although we are doing Cursive First…) we generally do about 3 “good” copies of the letter we are working on…
I am just starting to occasionally give him a 4 to 5 (small) word sentence, which he does find more interesting and is usually happy to do the whole sentence.
suzukimom, thanks! By the way, is your forum name related to music at all? My oldest dd is interested in the harp… poor thing, none of us are musical at all!
yes, I am a Suzuki mom – I have 2 children in Suzuki violin. My son – now 6 – is in the middle of his 3rd year. He had a few challenges with it, so is about half way through book 1. My daughter, who is almost 4 is in her first year, and can now play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, with 6 rhythm variations. She is moving quite quickly because of seeing her brother. my 18 mo old is already “singing” some of the songs they play!
