I have just discovered that one of the local libraries that I patronize has Mango Languages available online. I am trying to contain my joy at the possibility of my 13yo dd learning Spanish at virtually no cost….and I have a question.

If any of you have used this before, can you tell me which would be best for her to use, Basic or Complete 2.0? It says that Mango Basic teaches simple, practical skills for common, polite conversation situations in only a few short hours, while Mango Complete 2.0 teaches in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. I don’t know if Basic would be too simple for her (not teaching enough of the language), but I don’t want her to be overwhelmed either.

    Thanks,

    Sue

Sue, we just started giving Mango a try yesterday. A couple of questions came up that I need to get answers for. One is the very thing you mentioned, whether the basic is too simple. I told my oldest to go ahead and do it as a review, but she replied that the basic was only a few hours long and would be contained in the next level anyway. I did have my youngest start there just to give him a boost that he could get through something.

The other question we have is why is the 2.0 listed before the 1.0? I would have thought the numbers would be in order of difficulty. My daughter said that it looked like the 1.0 was actually more indepth than the 2.0. So, while I thought I had looked at it pretty carefully, I can see there is more to be done. So, I’ll be happy to share anything else we learn about using this product, and perhaps you can also if you choose to give it a go.

    Blessings,

    Cindy

I didn’t know that 2.0 was a level of learning. I thought it was just a notation of which software edition they were using. Ours doesn’t show a 1.0 level, just Basic and 2.0. Hmmmm……

Here is the blurb from the screen that comes up when we get on Mango from our library:

Basic Mango Basic teaches simple, practical skills for common, polite conversation situations in only a few short hours.

Mango Complete 2.0 teaches in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills.

Mango Complete 1.0 courses are aimed at students who want to move beyond basic language skills.

Hi Sue and Cindy! My name is Rachel and I am a Marketing Coordinator at Mango Languages. Bonjour!

I think I may be able to answer your questions!

    Mango Basic vs. Mango Complete:

Mango basic is the first two chapters of Mango Complete. Having Basic separated out makes it easier for someone who wants a quick introduction without becoming overwhelmed! 🙂

    2.0 vs. 1.0
These numbers refer to the version of the software as opposed to the level of the content. Mango 2.0 is the current version. Libraries that originally signed up with Mango 1.0 will still see it as an option in addition to 2.0 but it is being phased out (Mango 2.0 is much cooler!). Libraries that have more recently started using Mango will not see Mango 1.0 as it is the older version.

I hope this helped and feel free to contact me any time with any other questions. We’d love to hear from you!

    Happy learning!

Thank you, Rachel! That helps a lot, since my 8th grade daughter really wants to start learning Spanish, and Mango is readily available online through our library.
