I am using Winter Promise LA 1 & LA 3 for my children and would like to add more Charlotte Mason type things to our work. I have added copywork using Bible memory verses, and we are doing picture study using SCM’s curriculum guide. Since I am just learning more about CM ,and for financial reasons, I am going to make the best of what we have already bought and written in . We will pick and choose from the workbooks, may do some things orally, and just throw out a few things. We will cover grammar thoroughly with these workbooks, but there is no narration or dictation in any of them. I am beginning narration with our history (Simply Charlotte Mason module 5) and science (Apologia) studies, so that’s not such a big deal. However, WP uses SpellWell for spelling, and my dd can spell every word in the workbooks. I don’t feel that she needs to do all that busy work, so I was wanting to try some prepared dictation for spelling. Would it be sufficient to use passages from our McGuffey readers? I have the whole set, and she can read the 4th one easily. My fear is that I will not be covering all that I should (which is most likely crazy because she can spell all the 3rd grade words, so she must be ahead, right?) Anyway, I would just like some ideas of how to make what I have more CM friendly without spending anymore money
I’m thinking you all must not believe that there is a way to make workbooks CM friendly LOL 🙂 All this LA stuff is frying my brain! I’ve got workbooks, looked at Queen’s lessons, KISS grammar, Jr. An. Grammar, English for the Thoughtful Child, Simply Grammar, Spelling Wisdom, Easy Grammar, First Language Lessons, Ruth Heller books and am feeling quite overwhelmed at this point.
Alright, I know I am driving people crazy, but….:) What if I do this for LA…….Bible verses for copywork with both children, use our grammar/writing workbooks orally on the marker board, use McGuffey reader passages for my daughter’s spelling/dictation, and let them narrate history, and science? Would that be sufficient for 2nd and 3rd grade? The more I “research” the more opinions I hear, and the more confused I get! I long for simplification and can not spend anymore money this year on curricula.
Amanda, I think this would be plenty for your children’s ages. At that age, I do narration and copywork. I don’t do much with spelling/dictation until the child is 9–for us that has always been 4th grade–and we don’t do grammar until 6th or 7th grade. I think what you have planned will do nicely for your ages.
Thank you for the reply 🙂 I am trying to stay calm, but get a little frazzled by all these changes I want to make. I am not sure if I am doing it right and I have read about too many different methods. So, thank you for the encouragement. 🙂
Amanda
