After as much comparison and consideration as I could give without being able to actually see the programs, I picked Making Math Meaningful over MUS and Right Start Math for my almost 5 year old. Now, that I have it, I’m not sure what I think.

It definitely seems CM in it’s approach, but it’s so different than any math curriculum I’ve seen before. Very little in the way of bookwork and very hands on. Has anyone used it?

I purchased the book, as well, from a fellow homeschooling mom. It is very different, that’s for sure. I’m planning to recycle that purchase. 😉

I have my eye on Math on the Level instead. I don’t know that it’s the most CM, but ever since ditching RightStart halfway through K, we’ve been using Ruth Beechick’s An Easy Start in Mathematics as a guide, and it’s been working well. Math on the Level runs along the same lines as that.

We use Math on the Level and I do love it. It is very thorough. Does take time for the teacher but it works for all learning styles and allows you to move at the child’s pace, wherever he or she is at not necessarily where a book is at.

I don’t know anything about Making Math Meaningful though.

I’ve used MMM for four years now. Next year I will have four students using K thru Level 3. A close homeschooling dad friend (who taught 7th grade public school math) chose it for his children after attending our local book fair and talking to ALL the math vendors. Back then when I was just starting out and had no idea what type of math to go with, his opinion was good as gold.

MMM is very different in it’s approach to teaching math. Right away he has students thinking algebraically. I’m no expert, but it seems this will really benefit them later on down the line. There isn’t a big emphasis on memorization/drills at first. I encourage you to call the author. He is willing to talk with you, can help you understand the benefits of teaching math this way, and share tips on teaching. His own children were taught this way and were/are successful students.

I truly believe it is a good method. It is a bit teacher-intensive, but you learn how to manage it. I’ve noticed my DS7 especially enjoys it. I hope this is helpful. You can PM me if you’d like.
