We are starting the new school year tomorrow…..Surprised…..and the kids are already missing the notion of sleeping in, lots of play time, and no schoolwork we must get done! So, I’m pondering ways to make daily learning something that draws them all in and holds their interest. Of course, each of them has their own “least favorite” subject, but I’d like them to enjoy their school days, for the most part.

So…..what would you all say are the two best ways you make school (or a particular subject) more interesting and fun? I’m just throwing this out there as a general question to see what ideas I might have overlooked or not encountered before while trying to schedule things for the school year.

    Looking forward to your comments.

My kids are drawn in when we do big projects together.  Of course, we can’t do them everyday, but if we can do something once a week, maybe on Monday to give us a little jumpstart, it makes for a nicer week.  We have done things like … paint a 5’x7′ world map over 3 days, build individual covered wagons out of cardboard, drew the earth on oranges then cut them up to make flat maps.  Tomorrow we are mixing clay with paint to color it and then making a model of the earth’s layers.  We will leave our project on display as long as we feasibly can.

A really great read aloud book is always a kid-pleaser as well.  Kids can color or do handicrafts while that’s going on.

Even while the kids are just doing their work, we usually have some interesting music playing on spotify.  Maybe music that relates to something they’re studying.   That helps to create a pleasing atmosphere and seems to help everyone stay focused.

Sometimes we start our mornings with a sharing time where we all sit at the table and the kids share something they wrote in their lifebook or maybe something they learned in a lesson that the other kids missed out on.  It usually leads to some discussion and is just a pleasant way to start.

I’m not sure if this was the kind of answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps in some way.  I don’t really concern myself with making school “fun” but I do like it to be pleasant and engaging for all of us.

This year I’ve scheduled time twice a week for games and once a week for a special project (another game, experiment, history project, art project, craft etc.).  I also read on here (I can’t remember who posted it) about brush painting in place of copywork once a week.  I just ordered a book on it and am hoping to add that into our week.  My kids love anything art related!

I also asked each of them what they wanted to learn about for the year.  They chose Apologia’s Sea Creatures, Spanish, and several handicrafts each.  I also printed the list of narration ideas from this site and am hoping to do a fun one each week…building with legos, acting out the reading, drawing a picture, etc.

I’m hoping to have just enough “fun” to keep them excited…but not so much I feel burned out by December.  😉

Doing read alouds outside, and other subjects too if possible was a winner with my older kids.
