What do you do to make a child’s birthday a special day? My ds is turning 12 Friday and this is our first year homeschooling and I would like for it to feel like a special day but yet still be able to count it as a day. Any ideas or things you have done on your kids birthdays?
Take a field trip! We have done beach days, park days, museum days and hiking/nature days when we want an especially pleasant day because of a birthday or other event.
I asked my ds12 and he votes for a field trip, related to what you are studying if possible. Maybe the zoo, aquarium or a musuem. Field trips totally count as a school day! =)
Our regular routine has been to finish school in the mornings and spend the afternoon at a local pizza/arcade. Later on, we do cake and ice cream and gifts. This year we did a variation and have been taking them to Build-a-Bear on their B-day. It’s too expensive to take them all at once, so this has been great to spread the cost throughout the year! 😉 We also have lunch somewhere nice, but not too expensive (Golden Corral, Ihop, etc.). I am fortunate that DH is generally able to get the afternoon off on their b-days.
We always start the day with a special breakfast (usually chocolate chip waffles). I made a quick felt chair cover that I put over the birthday child’s chair to make them feel special. I blogged about it here:
my boys LOVE to wake up on the birthday to find the dining room decorated..whatever theme they are into…I usually make a nice big sign w/ their age and decorate appropriately w/ the theme! We have their presents all out on the table w/ décor..we are cheap so don’t think extravagant! 🙂 We have a very special bfast for the bday boy and then they always know that cake comes next! Yes, cake in the morning!
We kinda spoil them by taking school off! 🙂 The one w/ out the bday serves the one w/ the bday! Bday boy opens the presents and all gets to enjoy! It is not much to do, but the boys always gets excited the night before..and can’t wait to be “called” out to come see everything! It is the little stuff that counts! 😉
We’re celebrating a birthday today! I usally consult the child and we try to do what they want. In today’s celebration we are not having school, they rented a Wii game and are playing that all day. Birthday boy has no chores and he picks the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Depending on the area we might also get together with a group of homeschooling friends. Sometimes the boys choose the zoo, a trip to the children’s museum, Air & Space Museum, go swimming, or other fun outing. Sometimes we rent a movie, or go to a matinee. It really depends on the kid…we basically make it their day to choose everything! Only once in a while do I have a kid that says, “I want to do school”. Sometimes they will ask that we read more from our read-aloud or history book….often they will start reading their birthday books (because they ALWAYS get books for their birthdays).
Well I did end up asking what he wanted to do and he says “no school” 🙁 not what I wanted him to say but I agreed since his Dad took off work.
He loooooves bacon and eggs so I am cooking him breakfast(I don’t love to cook so we usually have simpler breakfasts)and then the day is his to choose what we do.
