I keep coming across these books here and there for cheap prices at used book sites. Does anyone have an opinion on them? What reading level would you say they are? Are there any evolutionary viewpoints in them?
My oldest son read most of them and now my second son is. They are chapter books, beyond early readers but fairly easy. I do not remember any mentioning evolution in the sense of people evolving from animals but there are ones on dinosaurs and the ice age (I think). They would not fit with a 6-day creationist view so I guess it depends what you believe. There is a magical element. The chidlren travel through time in a tree house aided by Morgan Le Fay (who in every other story but this series is a bad guy I think). She is a sorceress. The magic element wasn’t enough to bother me. They are not great literature but thye do contain facts about the times they visit. I always had problems getting books my boys coudl and would read themselves so thye fit the bill there. Most libraries have the hwole series so I woudl check them out and not buy them.
I have many of these in my lending library and they are very popular. My oldest son loved them. They kind of drive me crazy because they’re so broken up. My youngest two don’t enjoy the books as much as they do the videos. They LOVE those. There is good info in them in a way my boys remember. There are references to evolution in some of the books/episodes that would especially lend themselves to that.
We have several of them and a couple of the videos as well. They are a fun way to learn science and my kids like them. They do have some references that we don’t agree with, but I don’t mind that since we can use it for discussion of what we DO believe.
I agree with the above. My boys love them! And love the dvds/vhs! Both have lerned and retained much info from these books. There are also chapter books too! They are very imaginative!
Our family LOVES Magic School Bus books, and really LOVES the DVDs (we have even started collecting a few). I agree with 2flowerboys, the children really do learn and retain the info.
