My Mom wants to buy my kids some magazines. So what ones do you guys have? We have/had Nature’s Friends, Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr., National Kid’s geographic, Your Big Backyard. I’ve got kids from the age of 10 – 3, mostly boys and one 7yo girl. Just looking for suggestions for the kids and I to look through and pick which magazine they would like.
We’ve had the ones mentioned, along with: Hidden Pictures Playground (Highlights), Puzzlemania (Highlights), High Five (Highlights), Birds and Blooms (not a kid one, but my bird enthusiast loves it), and Which Way USA (Highlights). I have looked at Nature Friend and Creation Illustrated, but haven’t tried them out yet. I loved just plain ol’ Highlights when I was younger.
For your older son, Boys’ Quest is good. http://www.funforkidzmagazines.com. Your daughter may be old enough for their girl mag, Hopscotch. It’s billed as being for 8 and up. Samples available on the website. What I like about them is that they are ad free and do not accept content about fashion, celebrities, boy/girl relationships, that sort of thing. They also have an activity magazine for both boys and girls, Fun for Kidz, that comes out the months that BQ and Hopscotch don’t.
Focus on the Family also has a jr. version of Clubhouse for ages 4-8.
You may also want to look at the Cricket family of magazines http://www.cricketmag.com or the magazines published by Children’s Better Health Institute. Your youngers may like Turtle or Humpty Dumpty. http://www.uskidsmags.com
ZooBooks have one major animal focus each issue which I really like; Zootles for the 3yo, and is a younger one than that… Zoobies maybe? Groupon and the like have deals regularly where they are $10-$15 for an annual subscription, ad free I think. Very colorful, although not from a creationist perspective of course. You’ve probably seen them, but if not, libraries always seem to have them.
Forgot about Kids Discover. Each issue is either all about one science topic or one history topic. I have a few back issues about Vikings and the Wright Brothers, for instance. Don’t know if the science is overtly evolutionary or neutral.
