We recently listened to A Wrinkle In Time on audio and we liked it.  My son, 12, would like to read more of the books in that series, but I’ve heard that not all of her books would be recommended.  I cannot possibly stay ahead of this child in his reading, since I need to sleep and all that….  Can anyone help me out with some review in these?

I’ve read most of the rest of the Times Quintet series. A Wind in the Door is good for the same age range as A Wrinkle in Time. The third one, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, gets a lot more complex and emotional. Personally, just because of some of the emotional turmoil involved, I think that one is better for slightly older children. That said, it is probably my favorite of her books.

Then there’s the fourth book, Many Waters. I don’t recommend that one for various reasons… Mainly due to it being a weird time travel teen romance. Basically, the twins from A Wrinkle in Time go back to Noah’s Flood and both fall in love with Noah’s daughter who did not go on the Ark. And she’s romantically involved with one of the evil Nephilim mentioned at the beginning of the Biblical narrative, so the twins try to come up with a way to change her mind and save her life (because they know they can’t change the Scripture)… Yeah. It was just weird.

There’s a fifth book in that series, but it’s a sequel to all three of L’Engle’s series, which I haven’t read.

Her one book that I have heard nobody recommend is House Like a Lotus. I have not read it, but every place I see it listed, it hasn’t been recommended, so that seems like a good indicator to me.
