Well, I have 3 homemade abaci made (glue is drying – hopefully they work out….)
Don’t know how long they will last, but they were made out of things I had on hand, and I think they look pretty good.
They each took 6 craft sticks, 10 bamboo skewers (cut to size), and 100 pony beans (half dark, half light), binder clips (to hold while glue dries… may leave them on the corners),
They look really good… The beads do touch the table when sitting on the table… I am thinking of adding more craft sticks to the frame to build it up so that the beads don’t touch. I will also have to eventually add “labels” to the one side (place value side) – but have to say that I don’t totally get how that side is used from the demo on rightstart’s site.
OK, I’m pretty happy here… the abaci are working well.
I played “go to the dump” with regular playing cards with the kids, after showing them quickly how to use the abaci. I first showed them how the abaci has the groupings of 5 so you can read the numbers quickly, and we sang “Yellow is the Sun” using the abacus to show each number.
The kids used the abacus well for playing the game. Foxtrot (who is 3) was on my team… I would setup the abacus to figure out the number – and then ask her what number we needed (so all she had to do was read the beads – so for her it was a practice reading the beads without counting) and she did great! And when we were asked for cards, I would have her look for the number in our cards (good practice of number recognition) and then give them to ther person asking.
We played it twice, and the kids are looking forward to playing it tomorrow.
Now we just either have to get the darned kit… or I’m going to need to at least get the games deck and book….
