Are the LYCRA colored pencils really worth the price?  I was looking on Amazon and they are $25.33 for 18 pencils.

Lyra pencils are terrific. We’ve had them for years. I also like Ticonderoga Core Lock colored pencils, but I don’t think those are made any more.

Yes! We discovered these a few years ago and my kids gave up using markers and crayons. These are what they use for everything. Even my 3 year old prefers them. I usually by a set for the first day of school and make them last. They are down to nubs now but I also bought a couple wooden extenders. I am not on my computer now and didn’t click the link. We use the giants in case that is not what you were looking at.

Thanks.  Does one set last all year for all 3 kids or do you need a set for each child?  How do you make them last?  Do you only let your kids use them for school projects or only allow x amount of coloring each day/week?  I’ve never heard of wooden extenders for colored pencils.  Is that something also sold by Lycra?

I only order one set.  (They are anxious to get their new set when we start in a few weeks).  Here are the extenders http://www.amazon.com/Lyra-5766-Wood-Pencil-Lengthener/dp/B0060N7O5A/ref=sr_sp-atf_image_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407291941&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=wooden+pencil+extender+for+lyra+giants  I ordered them from a friend a few years back when she was able to order from some art place.  I have 2 and they are well worth it.  They just trade off what pencils they put them on.

No, I don’t limit them in using them, and that is all they use for drawing, coloring, making cards, art, etc.  It is funny that before this they used markers all the time and a friend of mine was saying she hated markers.  Completely on their own when I invested in these they gave up using the other supplies all together.

The one thing I don’t do a good job of, that a friend of mine does do, is I let them sharpen them on their own.  She makes the kids have her do the sharpening.  Obviously the more they sharpen them the quicker they will go.  I was also very surprised at the detail they could do w/ such big pencils, but they really are able to do quite a bit and they are a great quality.

Sorry for such a lengthy answer! HTH.  🙂

Your answer was perfect, Mandi!  When considering spending that kind of money on pencils I really want to know what to expect from them.  I think I will add them to my wanted list and see if we can get them this year.  Thanks so much!

One more thing I thought of…If you can do it, I think finding this wooden box is well worth the investment. http://www.maplesplendor.ca/pencils.htm  I havne’t done any looking around at prices, I just wanted to give you an image of what it looked like.  The first time we bought our pencils they were at a discount that I can no longer get, and we got this wooden box.  Last year I ordered the ones from Amazon that we have been discussing.  I discarded the package they came in pretty quickly and re-used our wooden box.  It could be a one time investment that you could continue to use.

I also have a shapener like this http://www.amazon.com/Dual-Sharpener-Pencils-up-10mm/dp/B003DV8TO2/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407328053&sr=8-2&keywords=pencil+sharpener+for+Lyra+giants and ordered extra blades, so I could change them and keep them sharp.

I am not an artist, but my friends who are more artistic than I introduced me to these pencils and love them.  🙂 As I write, 2 of our kids are using them at the breakfast table.
