There is a good chance our family might be relocating to Louisiana soon.  Is anyone on here in the New Orleans area who could help me make sense of the LA laws on homeschooling or any other good advice on groups, etc.?

I am surprised to see that there are less homeschooling families in greater New Orleans than in the areas surrounding Tallahassee!!  Wow?!  I’m not sure how to feel about that yet.

Thanks for any help.  Might not even be needed but I’m a pretty good at putting cart before horse! Wink

What? You may move? We would miss you at our Learning with Charlotte book club meetings! What about our retreat next year? I’m whining, can you tell? In all seriousness, we would really, really miss you at LWC.

    I love you too!!!

In truth it was probably wrong to even ask the question yet because things are still up in the air, but I read some things and got so worried at how different it seemed over there that I had to post.

I will NOT miss retreat!!!  No worries.  Laughing

We are in northern LA near Shreveport. I’ve never even been to New Orleans, but I may be able to answer some of your questions. There are two different ways of registering with the state. We register as a private school. All I’m required to do is send a letter stating how many students are in our school, that we will school for 180 days, and when out start date is. That’s it. For now anyways. I’m not sure about standardized testing because my dc aren’t very old yet.

Contact HSLDA.  While it’s always nice to have a seasoned homeschooler tell you how to comply with homeschool laws in a state, unless they are a legal professional that specializes in homeschool law, you really could get into trouble.  My husband IS a lawyer, but we still belong to and rely on HSLDA because they truly KNOW the law and can help you avoid lots of headaches.

You can read a summary of each state’s laws on HSLDA’s website. Or used to. That’s where I first went for info when we thought we were moving to Georgia.

I think you may have already gotten some answers from the others.  This is our first year we will be filing with the state.  We live across the river on the west bank.  There are some great homeschool groups in the area if you are interested in group activites.

Very good points … I’ll be very careful if this move does take place.  Thanks Ruth for the insight on CM/HS groups in the area.  If you have links I’d love to check them out.  I’m not a huge group activities person but I do like to know what’s around me.

Just wondering… Was there something wrong about my first response to Claire’s question? LA public schools are ranked among the lowest in the nation and the state doesn’t have very stringent rules regarding homeschool either. I know that seems strange to many who have more detailed requirements to meet. It will probably not always be that way here.

The first link is for Westbank Homeschool Org.  This is the main group I associat with.  The next is for Christian Home Educators Fellowship of LA.  I am not a part of this but know many people who are.  The last is a link to a list of other groups in the area.  I only do the one group so we are not always “busy” going to various group activities.   As far as I know there are no CM groups in the area, but then again I haven’t lookes since I started doing CM after we had moved here and I wasn’t looking for more groups to join.  HTH

A little off topic but . . . missceegee could you give me moreinformation about the retreat you mentioned.  Is it open to all CMers?  Where is it held?  Thank you so much!

Jlcs, aww sweet of you to ask. A Time Apart retreat is for the members of the CM co-op & CM book study I lead. This year was the first and we went to Eagle Island,GA. It was amazing! Quiet, peaceful, prayerful fellowship. There was no agenda, just morning and evening devotions.

It would be fun to do a big CM retreat and conference sometime though. I would love something like this myself.

Bethanna- no problem at all with your response!  I read the more on the other option LA offers which seemed very intensive paperwork wise and meddlesome too.  Here in Florida we enjoy some of the most “hands off” of any of the home school laws.  I was just worried I’d be required to do a lot more than I currently do.  I saw your choice too described.  That sounds like what I’ll do … IF we even make this happen.

    Thanks again.
