There was a thread a little while ago about the Louise Vernon books.  I have 2 questions regarding them – should they be read in order?  and if so, which book is first?

Also, while looking at them on Amazon, I noticed that there is another series by Brandon and Mindy Withrow – Courage and Conviction, Hearts and Hands, Monks and Mystics, etc.

Is there one author you would highly recommend over the other?

    Thank you!

They are in order in the curriculum guide. We accidentally read The Bible Smuggler before Thunderstorm in church and t references Martin Luther a lot – probably would have been nice to read Thunderstorm first but it’s alright because now my children are intrigued and are demanding we read it 🙂

We liked the Vernon books. I have not read the others.

Both are good. A couple of differences come to mind.

Louise Vernon are appropriate for a younger audience. Withrow are geared more for 12 or 13 and older. Some of the chapters would be appropriate for younger children, but some are a bit more intense.

Louise Vernon focuses an entire book on one person in history. Withrow covers a different person in each chapter.

I can’t answer your first question, but was surprised to find I didn’t like Courage and Conviction or Monks and Mystics. They read to me more like fictional accounts of historic events and people, with lots of dialogue that sounds too contemporary to have taken place, and much supposition. One of my kids would have a lot of trouble with much of the information being conveyed in dialogue form – it was confusing and he struggles with this anyway. I think many kids would really enjoy reading them, but I wouldn’t want them to be a main history source.

Thank you, ladies, that helps a lot.  I think I’ll start with the Louise Vernon book and see how it goes.
