Anyone read Louis Lamour? My son thinks they’re great – he found them at the library . It’s hard to get him interested in most any book, but these he loves. I don’t really want to take the time to read one…but I wonder if I should let him read them or not. Any opinions? Do they reinforce noble ideas and thoughts or feed the ugly ones? He needs the reading practice and something to help him love to read…but I don’t think I want it to be this! I got a couple of Henty books (for him to read on his own) hoping to hook him…but no go. We’re listening to our first one on librivox now and he’s hooked on that…so maybe there’s hope yet. Unfortunately, listening is a lot easier than reading for him. I’d appreciate any thoughts!
I read some Louis Lamour when I was a kid. They are not great literature and some would probably consider them twaddle. He and Zane Grey wrote about life during the “wild west”. Most of them follow a similar format: a strong, courageous, usually quiet hero (cowboy) who faces some hardship, an evil rancher for example, and then wins. He usually gets the girl at the end too. I have a soft spot for these books because my dad had read them when he was a kid, so whenever I hear of Lamour, it reminds me of my dad (who passed away a couple of years ago). However, there are gunfights, treachery, etc. (it’s been a long time since I’ve read one, so details escape me). I think it does show some of what life was like then (and they sometimes make references to real people). Arethere better and more worthwhile books to read? Definitely!
Maybe you could thumb through a couple of chapters to see if it’s something you want him to continue reading.
My husband has a large collection of these books, but I have never read them either. I would def. look at a few chapters, even if you dont want to. Just so you know what he is reading. hth!
