I have a history question. This is our first year homeschooling and we have read the entire book of Howard Zinn’ s a young people history of the US. WE LOVED IT!!! We used it only as a read aloud and then discussed as a group.
I am using our Bible Story book as a history spine along with Uncle Josh’s map collection. We have read this book many times but since they are 9 and 11 now, I feel we can really dig deeper into the Bible. So my question, should I do Module 1 or Stories of the nations? I don’t know where to start. I am picking up the ONLY copy our library has of Oxfords First Ancient History. Would you start Module 1 and use Genesis – Deuteronomy? As a companion? Or is Genesis – Deuteronomy considered a spine? I feel t his is what I should do but if there is something out there that is NOT time consuming I would LOVE ideas. My boys are in 5 and 6th grade so I may only get one year in each Module if I start now. We must end with US history and Government so they can pass their high school exams when the time comes.
Hey Becky – the Oxford is the spine for the Genesis-Duet. Module. The Module is a planned guide you use for 180 days and has you read 3 days of Bible, 1 day of geography and 1 day of history every week. Module 1 has you studying Ancient Egypt. You would continue to use Uncle Josh’s maps. So basically, it is already planned out for you – including living books. You may add or tweak as you go.
On the bookstore pages there is a free sample download which I recommend that you look at carefully for both modules and make your choices off that. If it were me, having just finished the US history book, I would probably do Module 1.
I want to caution you about Zinn’s American History. I don’t know about the young person’s version, but he was a known progressive and his college textbook is full of revisionist history. You may want to go to some older American History books and review their version of history in comparison to Zinn’s.
