Hi Ladies,
I’m looking for some light liesure reading for myself. I’ve read the thread on classics, and I fully admit that I’ve not read a whole lot in the way of classic fiction for adults; However, that’s not what I’m looking for.
I’m looking for something to take on vacation — something light, (ideally fiction) around or under 400 pages that’s easy to follow, well written and enjoyable. I have many books on my shelves I’ve not yet read, but they are mostly thick historic novels. I like a wide variety of genres, except crime or horror (I think I’m pretty safe on this forum, though). I do appreciate a bit of a love story.
So what are your favourite reads that fit into this category?

OHHH have you yet read the Father Tim books? They are by Jan Karon, first one is At Home in Mitford, and they are one of my first things I think of when I think of uplifting and good and wholesome but so easy to read they almost read themselves. 🙂

The Mitford series by Jan Karon (not exactly light, but not heavy either)
If you want to try Amish fiction, Wanda Brunstetter’s books contain the least heavy issues.
Anything by Janette Oke (nowhere close to 400 pages, though). They are historical, though.
I haven’t gotten around to Karen Kingsbury yet, but I’ve heard good things.

I do enjoy Wanda Brunstetter’s Amish stories. I’ve also read one or two Janette Oke books.
The book I most enjoyed recently was Fair in the Rose by Liz Curtis Higgs. Of course it’s the second in a triolgy, so now I need to find the other two and re-read. Not exactly light, but not heavy with tons of characters to keep straight or a heavy political plot. It’s a love story based on the Jacob/Rachael/Leah story.

Some additional Amish fiction authors who tell great love stories: Beth Wiseman (Daughters of the Promise series); Kelly Long; Kathleen Fuller. There are also some novellas containing stories by all three of these ladies!

You mean there’s light reading?!
Anyway, I don’t do much of that but things I consider light are:
HG Wells’
War of the Worlds
Time Machine
The Invisible Man.
Those are sci-fi, so I don’t know if you like that or not.
Others:
The Phantom of the Opera by Leroux
The HAppy Prince and Other Tales by Oscar Wilde
Fiction is not my strongpoint, but these are good books if you enjoy the genres. I’m sure there are others I’ve read (like Gone with the Wind, which is light, but the language is rough), but I can’t recall them, now, other than Bible study books, which are light, too.

I agree with the Mitford series by Jan Karon. I’ve only read a few of them. It’s funny this topic has come up because just yesterday I was telling my Mom that I thought I needed to do some light reading…just relax, prop my feet up, and read…and Jan Karon’s Mitford series was the one I mentioned to my Mom that I wanted to read. It’s been years since I’ve read them so I’m thinking about just starting at the beginning again and eventually I’ll get to where I left off. 🙂

Kristin Hannah or Jodi Piccoult aren’t bad. The Forgotton Garden by Kate Morton was a good one. I’m liking Patrick Rothfuss’s books but they’re fantasy (not sure if you’re into that).

Jodi Piccoult sounds familiar — was she the one that wrote “House Rules?” My mother recommended that, but I can’t remember the author.
I do enjoy some fantasy. I’m not really into Sci-Fi.

If you want a bit of a love story mixed with a little mystery and a little history I again recommend King of the Castle by Victoria Holt (I do not recommend some of the other titles written by this author. This was the first book I ever read by this author and unfortunantly it is one of few by her that doesn’t get very ‘descriptive’. This one is great though.) Light reading for sure!!!

The entire Anne of Green Gables series is good. The Kite Runner (although serious and a bit unhappy). I know there are others but my mind is suddenly blank…

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a fabulous short read – a love story, a living history book, and it made me cry! I think it would be a great vacation book…
Let us know what you end up taking with you and how you liked it! I am always looking for another good book to add to the stack…

I enjoy Patricia Veryan – historical, romantic, funny… I also enjoy Dee Henderson (O’Malley series) and Terri Blackwell, both write Christian mysteries with romance. David Edding writes an interesting series called The Belgariad (fantasy).
Just finshed reading Kidnapped and Robinson Crusoe. I enjoyed them very much – they were easy and not so intense that I HAD to finish them RIGHT NOW, but I did want to know what was going to happen next. =)

You know, I just read The Help and it was a super easy read. It’s not a love story so much, but it is light, engaging and informative.
ETA: I just remembered there is a little bit of language in it…just a heads up…
