    Hi There,

About this time every year, I start to questioning how I’m doing things in our homeschool. I don’t know why. Maybe I get a little bored and need to add something new, or I get discouraged at how far we are from where I’d thought we’d be.

What we do currently, is :

Bible-=Vos Story Bible, Bible Memory, Hymns, daily Prov with Bible journaling

Language Arts–Queen’s Language Arts book for each, Spelling Wisdom with Dictation

    Math–Teaching Textbooks

    History–TruthQuest History Romans

Science–oldest is doing Exploring Planet Earth, and nature readings, nature journal

Reading–Independent reading in a different subject/day with narration

I read aloud from different subjects/day

    Composer STudy–Chopin

    Artist STudy–Van Gogh

I have a 13 yod, 11yo twin boys, 5yod. We travel sometimes 2-3 weeks per month with my dh and spend alot of that time in the car. When in the car, we substitute my reading aloud for a G.A. Henty audio. When we travel we sometimes don’t even get to Bible. We take our math, Language Arts, and reading.

This week we were home and I was so looking forward to hitting the books hard. But I’ve been up each night with my 5 yr old who’s been sick. So I have not been able to do all that I’ve wanted.

This is when I start questioning if I should use a planned out curriculum like MFW, that will “save” me some time and have everything laid out for me. I’ve never used a packaged curriculum. I fear that I will start getting stressed out because I won’t be able to get everything done in a week if we’ve been traveling. The way they lay out the lesson plans doesn’t look too overwhelming, but I don’t know if this is what I’m needing. I even tried to put our own lesson plans in the CM organizer and it became a little hairy for me when I couldn’t access them while traveling and I feel like I do better with plans on paper than on the computer (though I know I could print them out). I don’t know how to explain my issue except to say that I do better with less time on the computer. And I haven’t been able to keep up with my own lesson plans.

I know, after listening to the DVD Laying Down the Rails, that I am good at self control, but NOT at self discipline. Sometimes I think that having laid out plans will help me–I’m not sure.

So, in the end, I could use some ideas and insight. It is something I’m praying about and talking with dh about. Sorry about this being lengthy. Can anyone relate to this? What has helped you?

This will not be very insightful or helpful maybe, but the way I see it is like when I am feeling also like I’m not getting enough done.

1st you mentioned your son is sick. That can be a 24hr job alone.

2nd have you had any real “vacation” days, no books (reading or text).

3rd have you done anything for “fun” lately?

So all I’m saying is it sounds to me you are doing just fine! 🙂 Maybe a little break specially sence your son is sick.

I know that when I feel overwhelmed, stressed, or like school just isn’t going well if I just say enough for today we’re having a day off, let go to the library for a hour or the science museum (we have a membership) or to the park it will just be enough to get everyone even mom back on track and going strong.

As far as a planned curriculm? I don’t know, that might make you feel worse because you aren’t keeping up with it all when you are traveling, and unless you don’t like what you are using I’d stick with it. I’ve done the planned one and it was more stressful than using all my own cause I felt like we could never miss anything or I’d fall behind. That was just my experience though.

Take a breath, take care of your son and maybe just maybe do something fun for the day!

Good luck I’m sure others will give you great advice
