Logistics of artist study

I am excited to begin artist study with my son this fall. I’ve got the artists picked out, but have a logistical question. How do you display your art when you’re not actively looking at it together? Some of my prints are in books, others in plastic sleeves in a binder. Some are 8×10, others are smaller. Any suggestions? I’d like to keep them out so we can enjoy them all week long, but the prints in the book are throwing me for a loop. One more thing…I have an all-hands 2-year-old that I have to plan for.

    Thanks!

I use an adjustable easel that sits on top of our entry-way table/chest of drawers. It’s not too high to look at comfortably, and we pass that table many times during the week. The adjustable easel can accommodate single pages, calendars, or books. My father made my easel, but I would think you could find some table-top easels at hobby stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

I try to have prints of the artwork if I can.  You can google images and find just about anything.

Currently, I put the print we are studying for the week in a plastic sheet protector and hang in on the fridge.  Right over the ice/water dispenser where we all go many times each day.

In the past we have also set the print on an easel, like Sonya, but we don’t have a convenient spot in our current house.

Like that idea Cindy, very practical if you can’t have and easel, which does not work for us either.  Linda

I put the artist’s print on my desktop as a background for a week at a time.

I love the idea of desktop background!

We don’t have a place to put an easel, either.

I have been putting individual post-card prints in an often frequented spot: the powder room! I tape the current picture on the wall above the toilet paper dispenser and the picture is studied while the person…umm…”multi-tasks”. Tongue out

For our picture studies we either display the print (in a coffee table type book) on the table behind our sofa or as the desktop background on the computer.

I also print 4×6 copies for each of my children and they slip them into their “Famous Artwork” albums. These are simply the slip-in albums w/ a few lines to add a note beside the print. We label the print w/ the artist’s name, date, title of the print, date studied and whatever the kids want to mention about that picture. This way my kids are accruing quite a collection and they enjoy pulling these out to look at them each week when we add to the book.

missceegee, how do you print out 4 x 6 copies? I like your idea; kind of like a BOC except for artists. Also, what size album?

    Thanks,

This was not my original idea, but came from Lindafay @  http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com/2009/07/picture-study.html

I download the image (high quality) from various sites online, save to my computer & then either have them printed or sometimes do it myself. I also set the image as my desktop background.

Here are some sites I use, but please preview as there are nudes on these sites:

I use a slip in album with a small lined memo section by each photo. I bought them at Target on sale, but have seen them elsewhere, too. They come in a variety of sizes. Ours hold 2 4×6 pictures per page side. Sample. They also come in many fabrics, colors & styles. I paid ~ $7-8 each for ours. Each of my kids has their own.

    HTH,

    Christie
