We have 4 kids using LOF; two in algebra, one in Fractions, and one in Liver. They can do most of the work themselves, although sometimes they do need help — and I can’t always remember how to do the problems! So far what has worked for us is to read over the problem carefully, then turn back and find where that sort of problem is first introduced. Then we read down the steps for solving it, and that usually is enough for the two of us (the child and me) to figure out how to solve it! lol.
One thing that has helped my kids with LOF is having each of them keep a math “story book.” Whenever one of them encounters a difficult problem, once they figure out how to solve it (with or without my help), I tell them to make up a story using their favorite characters or topics, and then write it out along with detailed steps in how to solve it. That way, they’ll have it next time they encounter a similar problem and can refer to it. This also helps cement the concept in their own mind, and they enjoy it because they’ve made it personal. Two of them even like to illustrate their stories. Anything to make it their own!
I love jotawatt’s idea! Another might be to have your child check out Khan Academy – they have math lessons on seemingly everything – it has helped my daughter with geometry this year.
My ds has managed to do it himself but he is a math guy. Do you have a friend you could run to when neither of you can figure it out? We have found the purple math website really good for explanations too.
I do have a friend who tutors math if it comes to worst but thanks for the ideas, I’ll look into Khan Academy and the purple math website (never heard of that one) first.
