    Hi all!

I am new to the site and have spent some time looking at various book selections in different categories.  So far, I have not found any books that are downloadable, being from the public domain.  Is there a way to find these more easily?  Are they marked as in the public domain anywhere?  I have only found e-books and am looking for great old living books that are in the public domain and I thought they could be found here.

    Thanks!

Do you mean you want to download old books HERE, from the SCM site?  This site is largely not for that sort of thing, though there are some free PDF and ebook resources available here, as well as previews of materials for sale.

I have had lots of luck finding great old books at Project Gutenberg, OpenLibrary as well as a site that lets me download books directly for my ereader called Feedbooks.  Google any of these and you’ll find thousands of classic books to share with your kids.

    Hope this helps!

Oh thank you!  So does anyone have any other “go to” places where they can find MOST of the public domian books listed here?  Where do the rest of you go to download books?

    Thanks so much!

    Besides the places listed….

    archive.org

    manybooks.net

google books has some for free

and sometimes I’ll just google the book name and the words free ebook and sometimes that helps me find a more illusive book (although there will generally be hits for sites that sell books but have things like “free shipping” on the page…

There are free Kindle and Barnes and Noble books, as well.  Their readers are free for the computer.

On Librivox, there is a whole list (on 2 pages) of books from Ambleside Online’s booklists. It lists the books by year and tells which ones are in the public domain. It then links the ones that are available on Librivox. You can access the list here.
