When you are looking at living books and maybe we’ve been at schooling awhile, don’t forget local authors from years past. For the 2014-2016 school years we are leisurely reading a local author, Walter Edmonds. He may be best known for Drums along the Mohawk, but he’s written many more. Bert Breen’s Barn won the 1975 National Book Award for children’s literature. Many of his books have local landmarks, climate, mention of roads and towns near us in his stories. Also, Time to Go House and Two Logs Crossing and Beaver Valley are loved by our family because of the living book “appeal” toward animals, science and geography. Check him out. Plus, our library has them all because of his notoriety. Martha

Our favorite of his is Matchlock Gun.

William O. Steele is a loved Tennessee author here.  Great idea to seek out authors from our area.
