I’m considering using LLATL for my younger children, 2nd grade and 4th grade – I feel like they are needing a little more thorough grammar instruction and repetition afforded to them in English for the Thoughtful child. Is LLATL very teacher intense – with five children I’m needing grammar to be as independent as possible.
We used LLATL this year. My 7th grader did the lessons on her own. My 4th and 2nd graders did them with me. There isn’t a ton of grammar repetition. Each lesson covers several different LA areas and grammar is just one of these. There is also spelling, phonics (in the younger levels), writing, handwriting, etc. If you are just wanting grammar, it may not be the best use of your time.
If you just want some grammar, would you consider combining your kids together and doing English Lessons Through Literature? I would recommend Level 2 if you combine them. Take a look at the scope and sequence of each level to see where you think your kids would fit. Level 2 covered capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, types of sentences, writing a letter, and several other things. The program also includes some picture study, narration, poetry, and copywork.
I ask because my oldest did LLATL independently and it wasn’t a success for him. This year I did ELTL with my second son and it was great. I’m going to continue the program with him next year.
This is what it looked like for us: 3-4 times a week, he would listen to a chapter in the literature selection in ELTL. (All of the books are available on audio for free at Librivox). Then, 3x/week we would spend 10-15 minutes going through the lesson in the book. We did all of it orally, and my son learned so much this year.
Anyway, just wanted to give you another idea for a program that might fit your needs.
