We have been using Pll and Ill, but are not completely happy with it. We were planning on using LLATL before I settled on PLL and ILL so I have the right levels for LLATL at home. I have gone through and picked out lessons in LLATL yellow and orange that I want to cover with my kids. My question is, do I have to have the student books? Could we not just use the teacher’s book and notebook paper? I have the student book for yellow, but not for orange and I do not want to use the whole orange book anyway.

Have any of you used just the teacher’s book?

I am using LLATL, but for the higher up grades.  I haven’t seen the yellow or orange books, but from the Teacher’s Guides I have I don’t see why you couldn’t just use the teacher’s manuals and write on paper, as long as you can cover up the answers on the sides.

You could certainly use notebook paper to substitute for the student books. I’ve read that many people do that.

Okay…well, I found a used student text online for $12 so I just ordered it. Laughing

    Jimmie,

What did you tell me before that you add to LLATL? Was it some extra grammar?

No biggie about the book. We bought them too. Sometimes convenience is well worth $12.

    I add most everything. Embarassed

Language arts is my “specialty,” so I can’t resist making it up as we go. It comes naturally to me, so I can wing it with high confidence. I’ve got LLATL on my shelf, but in 10 weeks of school so far, we’ve not pulled it down once.

Sprite didn’t like it, by the way. But I forced her to use it because I like it.

Okay, to answer your question — I added writing assignments, some basic and rather informal grammar (we did the Grammarland book), Wordly Wise vocab. Oh, and Spelling Power. I just can’t find an LA curriculum that is complete enough for my taste. So I just wing it.

I just told my husband the other day that I have given up on trying to find a LA program that has it all….Just like math! No one book will be everything that my kids need. It is really frustrating to me, but I am learning how to tweak things.

We have been using PLL and ILL, and adding “units” that I put together for the 8 parts of speech. We talk about each part of speech, read a Ruth Heller book about it, do some oral exercises from an online workbook text, and are memorizing the poem “The 8 Parts of Speech”. (btw, I got most of these ideas from one of your lenses 🙂 thank you!!)

We were also adding in Spelling Power, narration (sometimes written), and reading books from our own book list.

The kids are happy with what we have been doing, but I have been having nervous moments when I see that there are areas where they need instruction and our curriculum will not cover it this year or in the next couple of years.

So, I plan to replace the PLL and ILL books with LLATL and keep everything else going too. LLATL seems to have a bigger variety of skills taught that PLL or ILL and I think I will be more confident that we are covering more bases with it. I am hoping that it will be somewhat of a spine for language arts that I can build on if I need to.
