I noticed that some one mentioned using Meaningful Composition for writing instruction (it does look good, btw) and was wondering if any of you use Character Quality Language Arts. I am planning on using Learning Lang. Arts Thru Literature, but CQLA looks very similar with a little more “meat”, if you will. It also looks like CQLA gives more instruction with spelling, dictation, and writing than LLATL. Example: LLATL just says, “Write a 4 sentence paragraph about……” While CQLA gives instructions on how to write using “step by step” type instructions. Plus, the CQLA spelling is much more challenging, in my opinion.
I sat down with my husband yesterday and put samples of several different things out for him to look at. (He is much better with LA than I am)
We decided that an “all in one” curriculum is just not going to work for us. Both of my children need repetition and review to be able to remember things. One has a spelling weakness and the other has composition issues. We decided on First Lang. Lessons, Spelling Power, and using narration and dictation from our own readings in history, science, and literature for composition.
Meaningful Composition does look very, very good! However, we do not feel that our daughter will be ready for it in August. We will most likely use it later on and just continue narration right now for composition while they are still learning the basics of spelling and grammar.
