Just wanted to let you all know that Karen and I have expanded the Science portion of the SCM Curriculum Guide. It now contains some ideas for living science books, as well as conversational science courses. We hope it will be helpful. Take a look and let us know what you think.
This looks wonderful, Sonya! Thank you both. I was wondering how it would work. Would a student read the living books in addition to the science course? Or would they choose one or the other?
That’s up to you. You could do either the course or the living books, or you could do a mixture of both and select one or two living books to go along with the course you’re studying.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but I feel like I’m missing something. We are doing 106 Days of Creation this year (1st grade), and I can’t figure out what to do next year. The curriculum guide seems to suggest doing 106 Days of Creation for first through third grade alone but then doing it again for grades four through six coupled with Considering God’s Creation. If so, are the Apologia courses just an alternative to that combination or do I use those along with 106 Days of Creation every year?
On the other hand, if we did 106 Days of Creation this year (1st grade), do I try to fit in all the Apologia books between now and grade 6? Is that what is suggested in the curriculum guide? I’m not sure I understand the way the guide is written.
If you’re doing the 106 Days now with a first grader, you don’t need to repeat it. The additional comments for grades four through six are so you can combine all your children, grades 1-6, for that one course if you desire to.
When you’re done with 106 Days, you can select one of the Jeannie Fulbright courses listed and/or read some of the living science books. Don’t feel like you have to complete all of the Jeannie Fulbright courses between now and grade 6. They are just options from which to choose.
This is great! The clarity of CM’s Method is getting better everyday I come here! I’ve looked at Apologia, but did not know for sure what book was good for what grade level. THANK YOU!!! Blessings in His Joy, Melanie
Thank you so much Sonya! You have taken a load off my mind.
One more question… If we do not complete all the Jeannie Fulbright books (6) by grade six, will he/they still be well-prepared for the higher level science courses SCM recommends for the remainder of middle school/high school?
Oh, yes. Absolutely. The Jeannie Fulbright books are relatively new (compared to my homeschool experience )and weren’t around for my oldest two. They just did Apologia in high school and had no problem.
