I did see the post from a while ago where Sonya commented about having a set spine along with adding any living math books, and we have just started RightStart after dropping Math in Focus….but I have a DD7 who has stated emphatically that she hates math (she’s actually good at it though will no longer try). She however LOVES history, so I am hoping to incorporate many living math books. I’ve been to livingmath.net and am currently looking for their recommendations at our library, BUT…
Do any of you knowledgable ladies have any suggestions for living math books you’ve used or like or couldn’t have done without at this 1st/2nd grade level?
Hi Jenni, I havent personally used this(we are using Right Start too) but I have seen and heard good things about the Queens Living Math books……its worth looking into:) Wendy
There is an older series of books (I believe they also list them in the living math site) called the Young Math series. Excellent with titles such as Roman Numerals, Esitmation, Venn Diagrams, etc. Many titles to choose from and they cover from basic math to more complex concepts. Sadly they’re out of print (and some very pricy) but your library may have them.
My children have enjoyed many of the Mathstart books by Stuart Murphy, especially Missing Mittens (even/odd), Leaping Lizards (skip counting by 5 and 10) and Double the Ducks (addition doubles), which I read several times during that week of those math lessons. The library has many of these. We read these as part of our bedtime reading a few times per week. I think it has helped.
These are the living math books I have on my shelf. Just kept my eye out at library book sales and Half Price Books.

Thank you SO much, everyone! I had placed numerous holds on many of these books at our local library… it’s going to be MATH WEEK here soon! Mwah ha ha hah….. don’t tell my kids.
Seriously, thank you all for taking the time to recommend these… I’m so thankful for this forum and your brains!
