  • So one of my kids discovered the Living Forest Series from a bookseller at a recent homeschool conference. I had already used up my budget but want to keep this series in mind for the future. I’ve looked at it before, but still never read through any. For those who have them — what do you think? Do you consider it an excellent living nature/science book? Kind of along the lines of like a William J Long book or Seton, but maybe a but younger audience? Is it worth it to get the whole series, or are only a few real gems?

I know opinions are just opinions, but I would welcome some feedback. Thanks!

I know that someone on here specifically mentioned his name in a thread about books for boys. Here are the titles that they had read and so could recommend:

    How’s Inky?

    Moose Country

The Seven Secrets of Somewhere Lake

    Sweet Sue’s Adventure

The thread also mentioned that there is a site with some to read free online or you could purchase some at libraryanded.com.

Other than that, I can’t help you. 😉 I’ve never read any of them.

I own the set and love it. The last 2 books: Sweet Sue’s Adventure and Calamity Jane are written for younger children. The others are for older children (to adults). I found the first 2 to have quite a bit of the author imagining what the animal was thinking and making general statements about what life was like – this went over my kid’s heads when I read it aloud – they were 10 or so. By Jr high or high school this wouldn’t be a problem. The rest aren’t like that. They all are good though- definitely living nature books. The stories are about a couple that lives in the woods – only gotten to by canoe. They take in orphaned baby animals that end up being sort of like pets. They learn all about these animal’s behaviors – raccoons, deer, porcupines, etc. They also observe and tell all about the natural wildlife in the forest. If your child likes nature, they will like these books. They are a set of books I would keep for myself when all the kids move out. Does that tell you what they are like?
