We are devoting one term of next year to plants and trees and I would like to introduce my kids to plant cells. They are still pretty young, though, so it does not need to be anything super in depth, just a basic understanding is what I’m really going for . We are thinking of getting a microscope for them to look at leaves and flowers up close. I thought this would be a good time to introduce to them what it is that they will be seeing through the microscope! I don’t really want a workbook or anything like that. I would really like it to be in a storybook format with really good illustrations. My kids will be 9,7 and 5 when we would use this book. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything would be helpful at this point, cause I have NO ideas!
Wow, I’d love to see recommendations for this too.
The only thing I can think of is the Exploring Creation with Botany book from Apologia. It’s not a living book, but, like all the books in the series, it is conversational, and very CM friendly. Maybe try some Magic School Bus books like this one: http://books.google.com/booksid=cjtoLixbzjkC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false We’re using a MSB book with the Apologia Anatomy book this year as a suggestion from Sonya (I think). I told her that my daughter is only 8 but has begged to do Anatomy this year. I wanted a living book to go with it, and that was one of the main recommendations. You might also check this out http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=fabre&book=science&story=_contents I don’t know much about it, but there might be something in there you could use.
I know you are looking for a book specifically about plant cells. I don’t know if any of these will help. They are botany related.
From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbon is the title.
Plant Life in Field and Garden by Arabella Buckley
Mary’s Meadow : A Tale of Fields and Flowers by Juliana Horatia Gatty Ewing
The Burgess Flower Book for Children by Thornton W. Burgess
Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! Nancy Elizabeth Wallace
We just finished Apologia Botany today. Your 9 year old would do well with it. However, my 6 year old (just finished K) did pick up quite a bit but it was well over her head.
Thanks for the suggestion, pollysoup. I will look into those and see if there is anything in them for plant cells. I have many living books and resources planned for plants in general. I was just hoping to be able to find an interesting one that was more about the cells in particular. I have this large coloring poster diagram of a plant cell but I don’t think it would be of much benefit without some sort of relatable learning on the subject first. I was really hoping to find some sort of picture book type resource to put together a lesson with the coloring page poster. I will keep looking. Maybe I will need to use part of another larger book?
Thanks again! If anyone comes across anything, please let me know!
I was just going through our science for this coming year with my husband (who will be teaching it this year-woohoo!) and noticed something neat. We are using Apologia’s Anatomy and Physiology with the Jr. Notebook. WELL, in the Jr.Notebook, there’s a section for each lesson called “More to Explore” and it includes living book selections for each lesson. (Side note, each lesson, for Anatomy anyway, also includes coloring pages, copywork, flap books, mini-books and other activities to choose from specific to that lesson) So I was thinking if you could find someone who has the Notebook Journal, or if there’s a great homeschool-friendly book store near you who carries it, you might just fine a whole bunch of ideas to help you in your plant studies, including, perhapse, some good living book suggestions in it. Just a thought, hope it helps. And here’s a link to the Botany books, which might give you a better idea of the topics that would be covered, and therefore topics there might be book suggestions for in the Notebook Journal https://apologia.securesites.net/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_61
You’re welcome. I just read back over my message though, and I don’t think I made too much sense in the beginning: what I meant was for you to look at the BOTANY notebooking journal…not the Anatomy one LOL. I’m glad you got the jist though
Good luck!
