We are going to visit family for the first time in Oregon right on the Oregon trail. I want to introduce real living books before we go. We will be visiting museums and going on part sof the trail and I really want to have read some good quality books by then. I am having a hard time finding them for the Oregon Trail. I’d love any ideas, guidance, book names or links!! Thanks so much!

How old are your kids???? We Just finished Buffalo Bill by Ingri & Edgar Parin d’Aulaire. There are many references to the Oregon Trail or events that surrounded Westward travel. It is not specifically about the Oregon Trail though. I have had a hard time finding living books on this topic for very young children. All of the good ones that I find are chapter books for older kids. My daughter still likes lots of pics.

My kids are 7, 5 and 2. My 7 yr old is an advanced reader, so if the material is age appropriate she can handle 6th grade level on her own. I’ve looked at a lot of books from the library and others and they are kind of fluffy. I’d like some picture books or a story that was about 3rd grade level so it would be a good family read aloud. Not sure if I will fidn it in time though! We leave in 4 weeks!

These are picture books and early chapter books for early elementary (probably through age 8):
Papa and the Pioneer Quilt (Jean van Leeuwen) mentions several places along the way.
Journey of a Pioneer (Patricia Murphy)
The Josefina Story Quilt (Eleanor Coerr)

Thanks for the suggestions! My library only had Papa and the pioneer Quilt and The Josefina Story Quilt, so it look slike I need to do some internet scouring for another older onel Thanks so much!

Awesome link!!!!!! My library has about half of these. We just started doing pioneer and westward travel and I was getting worried because I was running out of living books already. My daughter likes to have pictures to look at still and I had already done some searches at our library with keywords for picture story books with limited results. It was nice to have specific titles to search for. Some of these look great. Can’t wait to get them!!!! Thank You!!!
