Hello,
I’ve been reading Laying down the rails and loving it but now I am looking for living books that will motivate my children to WANT to do this. The 6 we are focused on this year are cleanliness, attention, modesty and purity, obedience, self-control, and alertness to seize opportunities. My children are 9, 7, 5, and 3. The older three are boys and my youngest is a girl. I’m lost on where to even start. I really want this to be their idea. It’s really easy for me to switch gears and parent differently because I know it’s what’s best for my kids but unfortunately I’ve been a do it my way and do it now type mom and they aren’t sure what to do with it now that I’m trying to use this method. I keep getting glares from my oldest. I know that it would help if he were motivated, I have the books to encourage me but have no books to encourage them in these areas. Need some helpful suggestions PLEASE!

One that springs to mind for obedience is Hedge of Thorns from Lamplighter Publishing. Infect, you may check their website. They’ll likely have titles categorized under some of your headings.

We like the short stories in William Bennett’s books. “The Book of Virtues”, “The Children’s Book of Virtues” and “The Moral Compass” all have stories from history and mythology that emphasize character traits that are included in “Laying Down the Rails”.

Its not quite what you’ve asked for, but we’ve been doing An Honorable Boy Bible study from Queen Homeschool with our 9yo. It covers the meaning of honor, why it is important to obey and listen to instruction, how to work hard and be diligent, why you should be generous, not being selfish and self centered, how to have good manners, being joyous and content, why you should be studious and eager to learn, how to take care of your body, why it is important to make good decisions, how to be honest and trustworthy, and how to put your trust in God.
Each section of the study begins with work on a topic relating to honor. Then, your child will use Biblical examples to move into a more in depth study of the section’s topic. Lastly, an art activity will culminate the section.
He also loves the Miller books: Wisdom and the Millers, and Prudence and the Millers.
I’ll be interested to see what other suggestions folks have on this subject. 🙂
