My son will be in Grade 5 in Sept and I am trying to do my research ahead of time. He will be required to learn Canadian History as well as Canadian Government. What would any of you recommend that would be more of a living book style VS an workbook or textbook? I know this topic isn’t an easy one to find in living books, but maybe some suggestions out there would give be somewhere to launch from.
If you can get your hands on the book Modern History through Canadian Eyes, I’d say it’s the most helpful for finding living books for Canadian History. You can also check out Donna Ward’s website which has curriculum for history, geography, and government.
I am also trying to look into this as well. Based on our provincial requirements, we are to add Canadian history and government in parts. We are currently using Sajo and Her Beaver people with some enrichments in Spirit of Canada and some reading in The Story of Canada by Lunn. For next year, we will continue with the Brown version of The Story of Canada with more expanded resources and historical readers as the timeline would move forward to the formation of Canada and until WW1.
I am planning to purchase the Story of Canada by Brown for our 2025/2026 year. Where in Canada are you Johnica? We are in BC.
I recently started reading Dominion by Stephen R. Bown and it is fantastic. It is definitely a high school level read ( in my opinion). There is a book that this author wrote that would be book 1 if this is book 2 although both can stand alone. That one is called The Company. It’s prior to the history in Dominion.
Yes i think the Brown book can be purchased in Amazon or a specialized retailer like Classical Education Books. Is ur reading on Dominion for you as teacher or is it your spine?
I have been reading Dominion for my own education. Since we need to do a heavy Canadian history year, it’s useful for me to really dive into Canadian history first. I plan to read the Company afterwards, though reading in the reverse order would be recommended.
I think the Company or Dominion could easily be a high school spine book. It is a heavier read.
