simplemom, although my girls do reading every day, they have “special” reading each day of the week: art biographies, science, composer biographies, etc. So I just scheduled all of the books listed for science for grade 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays (our science reading days) for her to read independently. Although they don’t go with any particular curriculum, they are great reads, and my daughter really enjoys them.
Melanie32, I never thought about reading with her as she asked to be more independent. I wonder if she’d like that and if that would help her feel more connected? I think that is part of her angst with the program that originally made me post this thread. She noted that she’d like a program like our primary science program, and I defined that as more living books as she’s eating up the ones she is reading. Perhaps she just wants to do it together. I’ll have to ask her in the morning–thanks for putting your plan out there to give me an idea!
