I have only one son, a 7 year old, and currently am focusing on “Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic”.  Next year I plan on adding the Genesis to Deuteronomy CM course as well as the Pond & Stream Science books.  However, currently I would like to supplement what we are doing with some living books that teach history or maybe introduce life in other places of the world or even science topics for his age that we can read aloud together. I really want it to be fun and to begin to whet his appetite for learning in general and pique his interest in the world around him, especially as we live in Central America. As far as history specifically, I’m really open to history from any time period and from places around the world, it just needs to be suited to his level.   My husband is in the states and will be picking up a Kindle so I’m looking forward to loading it up with all kinds of fascinating living books for a 7 year old boy!

How about Little Pear and its sequel, Little Pear and His Friends by Eleanor Frances Lattimore. They’re the story of a Chinese boy named Little Pear and the adventures and mischief he gets into, which is different than a current little boy in the US would get into (I think!) as I think they were published in the 1930s or 40s. All three of my girls have loved these books and since the main character is a boy, perhaps your son would, too.

For ebooks, check yesterday’s classics and heritage history.  Amazon has many for free too.

He may like My Father’s Dragon trilogy.  And books by Clyde Robert Bulla.  Many of these are on the Sonlight readers list, which we use.

I’m not sure what reading level you need. Cornerstones of Freedom is a great series of history related books that if he isn’t ready for he will be soon. Also, Sanford Toussey books would be good for cowboys and the wild west (people like Wild Bill Hickock, Jim Bridger and Bill Clark.

I second Clyde Robert Bulla books or anything off the Sonlight reading lists or history readers.

Ronald Syme and Walter Buehr are two authors you should check into. Lots of history for elementary age children.

Also, do you know about openlibrary.com? If you’re kindle is a fire or you have a tablet/laptop you can read many of these for free through openlibrary. You check them out for a period of time. I’ve seen many Syme and Buehr books there. Unfortunately, openlibrary doesn’t work on kindle paperwhite (that’s what I have).

I have lot of other ideas (science, too) at my blog: http://www.readingthroughistory.blogspot.com I’m not selling anything or making money in anyway and I don’t mean to be self promoting. It is just easier to point you to lists I’ve created than to retype it all. If I’ve done something wrong here I do apologize in advance.

Topics I have books listed for are (with more coming soon)
    American Revolution
    Ancient Greece
    Ancient Rome
    Arctic
    China
    Chicago World’s Fair
Creation for Young (Preschool, Early Elementary) Children
Creation for Elementary and Older Children
    Dahlov Ipcar
    Deserts
    Dinosaurs
    Frontiersmen and Explorers
Missions and Missionaries for Young (Preschool, Early Elementary) Children
Missions and Missionaries for Older Children
    Texas
    Trees
    Wild West (Cowboys & Indians)

    God bless!
