Hello, I am new to CM and I guess I need help in finding out what is meant by living books and how to find them for my 13 yr. old son. And what is good literature for read aloud for our son and his dad and I to read together? Thanks so much. 🙂

Hi Simplemom! I recommend reading through the Simply Charlotte Mason blog posts to learn more about living books and a Charlotte Mason education. If you click on Plan CM at the top right corner of this screen, you can click on the free curriculum planner and it will walk you through suggestions for all subjects for your son.

Welcome Simplemom!  I did a post on my blog a couple of years ago comparing living and non-living books, if you’d like to take a look.

I found this post helpful.  It compares 2 science books, one living and one more factual.  http://www.livingbookslibrary.com/2012/04/is-new-always-better.html

There are so many great books for a 13 YO.   Bethlehem Books would have lots of good choices (and I think they have a sale right now).  In addition to the Free Curriculum Guide, you can also check out the CM Bookfinder for more ideas.

Check about the Little Britches series by Ralph Moody and character books by Rob Schultz like Boyhood and Beyond (he wrote four), to read aloud together.

I look through the Sonlight catalog for book ideas to add to the SCM free curriculum guide.  You can browse titles grouped by age/grade and historical periods.  Then I check out the reviews at Amazon.  We have decided to delay or skip some books due to more mature themes, which I learned of from the reviews.  Many titles are Newbery and available at most libraries or inter library loan.  I have purchased many of our books used through library book sales and betterworldbooks.com where I buy 6 for $15, free shipping.

It may help to get to know the opposite of a living book – twaddle:
