I would like to find a good livng book on slavery. This would be for a 9 and soon 7 yr old. I know about Amos Fortune..but think it is too old?? Am I right? We have been discussing the colonial period, George Washington, plantations, etc..they mention slavery in them a little bit. I also have explained some too, but would like a good book. We even learned about John Newton.

    Thanks!

Follow the Drinking Gourd?  It might be too young for your 9yo, but the soon to be 7yo might “get it”. Also, when I went to Amazon for the link to The Drinking Gourd, a couple of suggestions popped up with it-one called Sarah and the Freedom Quilt.  I haven’t read it, but it looks like a good story.  You might just explore the suggestions at the bottom of the Amazon page in the link.

    Good luck!

Follow the Drinking Gourd, and Sarah and the Freedom Quilt are nice picture books.  Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker, The Last Safe House: Story of the Underground Railroad by Barbara Greenwood are a bit longer.
