I never used a pre-school curricula with my older boys but youngest (3) is showing much interest in “doing school” and desiring to learn to read. It would be nice to have something layed out for me this time. Does anyone have experience with either Heart of Dakota’s Little Hands to Heaven or Before Five in a Row (we already have most of the BFIAR books and my ds enjoys them immensly)? We also have SCM’s Early Years and love it! Any thoughts are most appreciated! Thanks – Heather

We use Language Lessons from Queen’s.  It teaches the ABCs with poetry, handwriting, picture study, etc, mixed in.  I have used Little Hands and MFW K for short periods also.  Too much busy work for me to use as is.  I really like the book suggestions in the MFW K book basket, we use them now with Queen’s Language Lessons and Math Lessons for a Living Education for my 4.5 year old.

Between your choices, I would choose BFIAR.  My friend used FIAR until her kids were in 5th grade.  Smile

I use Language Lessons from Queens also, and really like them.  I tried Little Hands to Heaven a couple of years ago and it drove me nuts :-).    I also use these:

The ones from Rod and Staff are not CM in style, but some of my little ones have really enjoyed the workbooks. Coupled with lots of great books and ideas from SCM’s Early Years and I have happy pre-schoolers.

I have used both. BFIAR isn’t really lesson plans, just ideas you can use with the books.  We ended up just enjoying the books together and skipping the activity ideas.  Some were ones I could think of on my own anyway, some were just a bit of a stretch to make it “fit” with the book, and some were just way too much work for mom.  But the books are fabulous!  Little Hearts is all laid out day by day, if you like that sort of thing.  We ended up just using the Bible stories portion of it, as my son learned his letters WAY faster than the guide had him going.  He did enjoy some of the act it out activites, and we really liked the Singing Bible CD’s.  Both programs are pretty mom-intensive.  If you’re looking for workbooks, I also like the Rod and Staff Preschool workbooks.  Plus, they’re cheap!

We used Little Hands to Heaven and LOVED it.  It only took a small amount of time, so there was a lot left over for reading good books and outside time.  I loved that it kept me more consistent with doing Bible time.  The Singing Bible cd was a wonderful resource and we still listen to it even though we aren’t doing LHTH this year ( I will next year when my 2nd child turns 4).  I loved that it was so centered on the LORD and His Word.  There are little fingerplay type things to go with each lletter sound that correspond to the Bible stories (ex. A-A-Adam for Adam and Eve) and my daughter LOVED them.  I was also impressed that she learned to count by 2s, 3s, and 4s with this program.  It’s gentle, sweet, and focused on the Lord.  You could definitely do LHTH and then add in a bunch of great books to read together.  Hope this helps!

Thanks ladies! In looking into LHTH further, I know my little guy would thoroughly enjoy it. Also, looks simple enough for my 15 & 10 yo to present lessons to him once in awhile. I know my baby’s not ready for workbooks yet but will look into those when he’s a bit older. We used Queens with 11yo when he was younger and might start those later. My 3yo will sit and listen to books for hours and is already narrating – got to love it. I’m usually not big on starting anything formal until at least 5 or 6 but LHTH seems perfect for him now. Thanks again! God bless you & yours! ~ Heather

I used B4FIAR last year and although I enjoyed most of the books suggested I wasn’t that impressed with the go-along suggestions/activities. I ended up using the book list and then getting most of my activities off of homeschoolshare.com
