I just need a little clarity on the literature suggestions. If I’m reading it correctly those books are supposed to be used as read alouds. Is there a list somewhere that suggests books for independent reading by age/grade/level? I saw the pathway readers suggested for the early years but wondered about other books. Thanks!

If you have multiple children, it has been suggested to pick one literature read-aloud that’s level is somewhere in the middle of all your children’s ages/comprehension level. You could assign some of the others as independent reading if you wanted. I think most of the literature suggestions here are classics and appeal to a wide age range of children, that’s why they are not broken down into specific ages/grades. If you are using the history modules, there are some good book suggestions there you could assign for independent reading…for older children. If you have younger children too, I sometimes look at Sonlight’s book lists or Epi Kardia’s too. What ages are your children? I’m sure others will chime in here with suggestions. Hope this helps!

Mine are all younger. I looked at sonlight’s list but got to wondering if the scm folks had put together a better list and I just wasn’t finding it. Ha!

I have never looked at Eli Kardia so thanks for the suggestion!

lnosborn, that you for sharing about Epi Kardia! They have some great selections on their website. I like how they list them by age and subject.

The history guides list books for independent reading.  There are also some suggestions on the science pages…we often do these for independent reading.  For the literature read aloud books, I try to alternate more difficult books with easier ones.  Earlier this year we read All of a Kind Family and followed it with A Christmas Carol, then we read The Long Winter which was more in the middle.

I also like to look at booklists for AO and HUFI to get suggestions…I’m putting together a reading list for my older two so they have ideas of what to read.  We have lots of books on hand (and on our e-reader), but they have a hard time picking good ones for their ages.  This way they’ll have a long list of appropriate books to choose from!

We also have a shelf of early readers for grades 1-3 and some beginning chapter books.  To get ideas for these, I browse homeschool curriculum reading lists.  When the same book pops up again and again I assume it’s a good choice.  Sonlight and Heart of Dakota are my favorite places to look for ideas.

Sorry for the typo earlier! He he he, Epi Kardia. Auto correct gets me every time!

Holly, I am doing the same as far as putting together a list for my oldest. Half the time I pick out a good book for him and it turns out to be boring/inappropriate.

I so respect the book choices the scm folks have made in the history modules, etc I was curious what they might recommend. I will pull from ya’lls suggestions! Thanks for the help!

Oh, the booklists…I have mine in excel, and I know many of the other moms do the same. PM me if you want it and I will email it to you. It is a constant work in progress, but the lower grades feel fairly complete to me after schooling 5 kids :).
