In the past we have read a read aloud together for literature and I’ve let the kids pick and choose what other things they want to read for “reading time” everyday. Other than the books listed for the history modules, I have not scheduled “required reading” for my children so far. They are getting older now, and I’m wondering if I should have a list of certain books that they are required to read for “literature”. What do you all think about this? (they are 9 & 11 btw)
Mine are required to read a science book, a history book, and a free reading book of their own choice in addition to the literature I read aloud. They choose the free-read book that I feel meets their reading level and are required to read it and narrate daily. This is the one that I use to practice fluency and concentration on with my dd with APD – she reads it aloud to me sometimes, or we alternate pages. It generally holds her attention longer.
My children are similiar in age to yours. As they get older, there will be more required of them. I am working on those lists you speak of now. 😉
Yes. What I have them do is read Thorton Burgess or scientist biographies…that kind of thing on their own in addition to our regular lesson. Then they read things like Little House, biographies and stories of historical events. We alternate days on those usually, but the free-read literature is daily. I also read literature daily aloud.
