Does anyone have a literature book list of books that contain the best “ideas”? Let me explain what I mean by “best”. Living books contain ideas that form our thoughts, emotions, behavior, not just dry facts. There are so many good living books out there that my kids really enjoy, but I only have my kids for a limited time, and I want to spread before them a variety of literature that promotes a God-centered, Christ-exalting world-view. I want to make sure that I “tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of The Lord, and His might, and the wonders that He has done” (Ps 78:4). Heidi by Johanna Spyri would be a good example of this. Anyone recommend others? We will be in the middle-ages/renaissance time period this year.
If you are looking for books that help shape your chid’s character, Lamplighter books are AMAZING. Some of our favorite titles are The Lost Clue and That Printer of Udells. That Printer of Udells is the book that led President Ronald Reagan to become a Christian and inspired him to become the President of the United States-just read the forward. Ronald Reagan actually wrote part of the forward for this book.
Other favorites are The Basket of Flowers, Rescued From Egypt, Teddy’s Button, The Stranger at Home, and many others listed on Lamplighter’s website. You can also purchase the books from Grace and Truth Books.
These books are of excellent literary quality and address behavior issues at the heart level.
I heard the publisher of these books, Mark Hamby, give the whole story behind why his life mission has been to get these older books back into print. Such a touching story – very real and transparent!
There is a book on parenting called Children of a Greater God which is basically about shaping your children through stories. It has a book list plus the author also has other books listing books.
